Chamber to hold scholarship auction, holiday mixer Nov. 15

Annapolis and Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce will hold its annual scholarship silent auction and holiday mixer from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Nov. 15 at Sandy Point State Park.

The event features a sneak preview of Anne Arundel Medical Center's annual "Lights on the Bay" holiday show. Auction items include a one-week condominium rental in the Florida Keys, laser vision-correction surgery and dinner for two. Local restaurants, including Buddy's Crabs and Ribs, Chart House, Copeland's of New Orleans and Atlanta Bread Company will provide food.

Proceeds from the event will fund the chamber's annual scholarship program through Anne Arundel Community College and Scholarships for Scholars, a local organization that provides scholarships to high school seniors. Part of the proceeds will help fund "Lights on the Bay."

Annapolis Junior League seeks grant applicants

Junior League of Annapolis Inc. is seeking applicants for its annual Community Assistance Donation Grants. The grants are available for volunteer projects, to be carried out in Anne Arundel County, that focus on mentoring children. Grant recipients must document how the money is spent and submit an evaluation of the project. The grant money must be spent within one year of receipt unless otherwise negotiated.

The application deadline is Nov. 9. Grant winners will be announced at a holiday luncheon Dec. 18 at Chart House restaurant in Annapolis. Information: 410- 224-8984.

Wins competition: Design-Build Institute of America awarded Coakley & Williams Construction Inc. its National Design-Build Award for the Thomas V. Mike Miller Senate Office Building in Annapolis. The company was in charge of the design and construction of the building. Coakley & Williams provides design, building, general contracting and construction management services to clients in the mid-Atlantic region.

Donation: Business Network Int'l. presented the American Red Cross with a check for $77,300 to benefit its disaster relief fund. BNI is a business referral organization with 10 chapters in Anne Arundel County.


New director: Annapolis Regional Transportation Management Association has named Amy Bender Cornett executive director. Cornett has previously worked for USinternetworking Inc., Six Flags theme park and Annapolis and Anne Arundel County Conference and Visitors Bureau.


Open house: Annapolis and Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce will hold an open house for new and prospective members from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Wednesday in Suite 810 of Empire Towers, 7310 Ritchie Highway, Glen Burnie. The event will feature presentations about the chamber and a member of the chamber's marketing committee will discuss ways to market a business through the organization. Grant applications: Maryland Historical Trust, an agency of the state Department of Housing and Community Development, is accepting applications for Preservation Incentives for Local Government grants. County governments are eligible for the grants, which may be used to help pay for heritage preservation activities, surveys and evaluation plans. The application deadline is Wednesday. PBA meeting: Pasadena Business Association will meet at noon Nov. 7 at Michael's Eighth Avenue. Myra Wieman from AAA will speak on road rage. Reservations should be made by Friday. The cost is $12 with a reservation or $15 at the door. Information: 410-987-4887.

Public relations: The Annapolis and Anne Arundel County chapter of Public Relations Society of America is accepting nominations for its Silver Dome awards, which honor outstanding public relations programs and professionals.
