County readies Halloween fun

Events: Parades, contests and trick or treating set for youngsters in Carroll.

To celebrate Halloween, Carroll County towns and shopping centers have planned parades, costume contests, trick or treating times and other activities, including the following:

Westminster: Trick or treating from dusk until 8 p.m. Wednesday inside city limits. Children age 12 and younger can make the rounds with a parent or adult guardian. Trick or treaters are encouraged to wear light-colored clothing for safety. Residents wishing to participate should turn on porch lights.

Westminster parade: American Legion Post 31 will hold its 57th annual Halloween Parade on Tuesday through downtown Westminster.

Registration begins at 6 p.m. on Monroe Avenue, with the parade starting at 7 p.m. The parade will pass down Pennsylvania Avenue to Main Street to Longwell Avenue to Westminster City Playground. Cash prizes will be awarded at parade's end.

The American Legion requests no heavy trucks, skateboards, inline skates or bicycles in the parade. Parade participants are prohibited by city ordinance from throwing candy to onlookers. Candy may be given to children by hand.

Sykesville: Trick or treating will be allowed from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Halloween.

Mount Airy: The town has no restrictions on trick or treating but asks residents who wish to hand out goodies to turn on their porch lights Wednesday evening. Information: 410-795-6012.

Hampstead: Trick or treating from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday. Information: 410-239-7408.

Manchester: Trick or treating from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday for those age 12 and younger. Residents are requested to turn on their porch lights if they wish to hand out treats. Information: 410-239-3200.

New Windsor: The town has no set date for trick or treating and does not encourage it. Information: 410-635-6575.

Union Bridge: Trick or treating from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. Information: 410-775- 2711.

Taneytown: Trick or treating from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. Children younger than age 12 must be with an adult. Residents wishing to participate should turn on porch lights.

TownMall of Westminster will hold mallwide trick or treating starting at 5 p.m. Wednesday while supplies last. Children can pick up free trick or treat bags at the customer service center. Information: 410-857-0300.

140 Village Shopping Center will sponsor a visit from Uncle Goose the Clown from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday. Information: 410- 840-0991.
