Wilde Lake's Nicole Arkin is not a big scorer. But the goal she made in yesterday's opening-round game of the Class 3A North Regional playoffs was big.

The goal, at 26:07 of the second half, was the game-winner for the Wildecats field hockey team, which rallied from a one-goal deficit to top Liberty, 2-1.

The Wildecats (5-7-1) will play North Carroll on Thursday in the quarterfinals.

Arkin, who had only scored one goal all season, also assisted on Wilde Lake's first goal, scored by Lauren Barkley at 27:05.

"It was nice to win, but we could have played better," Arkin said. "We had a lot of scares in our circle."

Gina Passerello of Liberty (2-8-2) scored her first goal of the season at 29:14.

Lions coach Carla McCarron thought transportation problems had a negative impact on her team.

"Our bus was late, and then our bus driver got lost," she said. "It was a big factor."

Wilde Lake coach Laurie Donnelly praised her goalkeeper, Marie Bounds (eight saves), and back Susan Shyu as well as Arkin's offense.
