Disability panel honors health club as Employer of Year
The Columbia Athletic Club, a Columbia Association facility, was honored as Employer of the Year by the Howard County Commission on Disability Issues at a Disabilities Awards Breakfast on Oct. 4.
Kyle Archer, a maintenance and fitness staff member born with Williams syndrome, a chromosome disorder, nominated the club for its efforts to respectfully treat people with disabilities.
Library workshop to focus on job-search tools
The central library, 10375 Little Patuxent Parkway, Columbia, will offer a workshop on using library resources, "Job Search Tools at the Library," from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Nov. 14 and 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Dec. 12.
Registration, which is required, begins two weeks before the start of each program.

State, county to give small-business advice
The Maryland Small Business Development Center and Howard County Economic Development Authority's Business Resource Center will sponsor a seminar, "Is Franchising for You?" from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Nov. 7 at the Center for Business & Technology Development, 9250 Bendix Road North, Columbia. The cost is $25.
"The First Steps to Starting Your Own Business" will be offered from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Nov. 14.
Topics will include choosing a legal business entity, keeping records, obtaining start-up money and finding resources in the county.
A continental breakfast and networking are planned at 8:30 a.m. Presentations will begin at 9 a.m. with a question period at 11 a.m. The cost is $25.
