Jane Fitzgerald continued her monthlong pace of outstanding golf when she birdied the last hole at Chestnut Ridge Country Club and won the third annual Maryland State Women's Open championship by one shot yesterday.

Fitzgerald, an amateur from Kensington, finished 75-76-151 to edge Marjorie Jones, a professional from Old Westbury (N.Y.) CC, 75-77-152.

Amateur Andrea Kraus, the 1999 titlist in this event, from Woodholme CC, rode the day's low round, a par-74, into third place, 79-74-153.

Winner of the Middle Atlantic Women's Amateur title and a quarterfinalist in last week's U.S. Women's Mid-Am, Fitzgerald, 39, who used her husband, Jim, a Chevy Chase head pro as caddy, trailed Jones by three strokes at the turn, then slowly but surely took charge. "I knew the golf course played to my strength [length off the tee and a solid iron game] on the back and there are four par-5s I can reach with irons," she said.

She birdied two of them, the last, No. 18, from eight feet, while Jones, in the same group, stumbled home, three-putting Nos. 15-16 for bogeys, missing a three-foot putt at No. 17 and getting no better than a par at 18. After getting to the turn even, she shot 3-over on the back.

Kraus, also a long hitter but beset by putting woes of late, was 1-under par on the front, then included three birdies in going 1-over par on the back. She was in the U.S. Mid-Am field also, making the cut, then losing in the first round in a 23-hole match.

Joan McDonald, the defending champion from Winged Foot GC, was second to Jones in the pro chase, 79-76-155. The event drew 37 pros in a field of 68.
