Unidentified man killed by group of 5 on Clifton Avenue

A 40-year-old man was stabbed to death by a group of men shortly before 3 a.m. yesterday in the 3300 block of Clifton Ave.

Police said they didn't know why the group of five men assaulted the unidentified victim, who was stabbed multiple times in the back and upper torso.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:43 a.m.

In Howard County

Death of Columbia man is under investigation

COLUMBIA - Howard County police were investigating the death of a 29-year-old Columbia man yesterday.

The body of Chad Everett Johnson was discovered about 3:10 a.m. on a footpath in the Village of Harper's Choice after police received several reports of shots fired at the rear of the 5500 block of Green Dory Lane.

Police said Johnson, who lived in the 10500 block of Twin Rivers Road in Columbia, had apparently been shot.

In Maryland

4 nonprofit organizations receive seal of approval

Four organizations received the seal of approval yesterday from the Maryland Association of Nonprofit Organizations' program to encourage accountability in the nonprofit sector.

The organizations - Advocates for Children & Youth and Maryland Center for Veterans Education & Training Inc. in Baltimore; Women Entrepreneurs of Baltimore; and Crossroads Community Inc. in Centreville - met the 55 "Standards for Excellence" required by the program, from having a conflict-of-interest policy to proper accounting.

Groups that pass the test may use the association's seal of approval - a box with a check mark.
