Youngsters sought to help with annual Books For Kids Day

BALTIMORE - The Baltimore Reads literacy organization once again is putting together a group of young people ages 8 to 12 to help with its annual Books For Kids Day event, which in the spring collected more than 50,000 books to distribute to low-income families throughout the area.

Children who serve on the committee help oversee and judge a poster contest publicizing the event, choosing the winning design from drawings submitted by children throughout the area.

Lecture examines depiction of children in literature

COLLEGE PARK - Claudia Mills, author of 30 children's books and a philosophy professor at the University of Colorado, will give the 2001 MacLeod Children's Literature Lecture at 7 p.m. Friday.

In a talk titled "Innocents or Dumbbells: An Ethical Appraisal of the Portrayal of Mental Disability in Children's Literature," Mills will discuss the depiction in children's literature published during the last 150 years of children with mental disabilities.

The lecture, to be held in the Architecture Building Auditorium of the University of Maryland, College Park, is free and open to the public. Information: NUMBER TO COME

Three young-adult authors to speak at library today

BALTIMORE - Three noted science fiction/fantasy authors popular with young adults will take part in a discussion at 2 p.m. today at the Enoch Pratt Free Library's Central Library, 400 Cathedral Street.

The event will feature Charles Sheffield, whose work includes the "Jupiter" fiction series; Sallie Lowenstein, who has written two young adult science fiction novels; and Charles de Lint, whose work includes urban fantasy.

Young people attending the event will receive free copies of books by de Lint and Sheffield at the book signing after the program.
