Catoctin Colorfest Arts and Crafts Show

Travel to Thurmont at the foot of the picturesque Catoctin Mountains this weekend for the 36th annual Catoctin Colorfest Arts and Crafts Show. More than 360 juried artisans will display and sell their work at Thurmont Community Park and the Guardian Hose Co. Activities Grounds. Food and entertainment also are part of the festivities. And rail excursions to Sabillasville and Union Bridge are offered by the Hagerstown Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society. Free shuttle bus service to the festival sites is provided from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Catoctin High School, Sabillasville Road; NVR Manufacturing Co. and the old Thurmont Shoe Co. on Apples Road; Thurmont Elementary School, East Main Street; and the Municipal Parking Lot, Center Street.

Colorfest hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Admission to the festival is free; parking is $5. Train rides (call 301-791-3130 or 301-739-4665) are $5 and $10. For the festival, call 301-271-4432 or visit the Web site at www.colorfest.org.

Delta and Cardiff Heritage Festival

Though Delta, Pa., and Cardiff, Md., are divided by the state line, they share the same Main Street and the history of Welsh slate mining. On Saturday, residents of both towns will not only share their cultural history with visitors, but they will also salute servicemen and servicewomen and honor civilians at the annual Delta & Cardiff Heritage Festival. Throughout the day, there'll be demonstrations of slate splitting, Welsh singing and folk dancing, exhibits of historical artifacts, and craft booths featuring works created from natural local products, including slate. The salute to veterans includes a "Wall of Honor," featuring about 700 photographs of local veterans and civilians who served or assisted in various military actions.

Children will enjoy games, face painting, balloons and a petting zoo. And there's plenty of food.

The festival runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. along Main Street and Pendyrus Street in Delta, Pa. For admission, bring nonperishable food, personal-care or household items for the Mason-Dixon Food Locker. Call 717-456-7124 or 717-456-5580.
