Matt Tielsch

Boys' Latin, soccer

The 6-foot, 180-pound senior goalkeeper registered his seventh and eighth shutouts of the season with wins over Park, 4-0, and Severn, 2-0. The victories marked the school-record 21st and 22nd career shutouts for Tielsch, a four-year starter who eclipsed the old record (16) with a 3-0 win over Mount Carmel on Sept. 17.

The Lakers improved to 9-0 overall and 7-0 in the MIAA B Conference with the victories. The muscular Tielsch is known for his acrobatic saves, such as his severe-angled stop of a sure goal against Severn.

A B-average student with a 950 SAT score, Tielsch has visited Delaware and James Madison, and also is interested in Loyola, UMBC and Penn. Tielsch plays club ball with the State Cup champion Soccer Club of Baltimore, which lost in the regionals to the eventual national runner-up.

Laura Shand

Liberty, volleyball

The junior setter had 100 assists last week in leading the No. 9 Lions to victory in the Carroll County Volleyball Tournament as well as a three-game sweep of North Carroll.

The Lions' tallest player at 5-9, Shand is the only setter in their 5-1 offense and also doubles as a middle blocker. In the 10-game tournament Friday and Saturday, Shand had 80 assists, 12 blocks, eight kills and nine digs while serving at 100 percent with two aces.

In the round-robin preliminaries, Shand's efforts led the Lions to a 15-5, 15-7 sweep of then-No. 10 Francis Scott Key, which had won the tournament seven years in a row. They went on to take the best-of-three final over South Carroll, 15-4, 15-12.

Earlier in the week, Shand had 20 assists and five blocks in a 15-3, 15-13, 16-14 win over North Carroll.
