Liberty took advantage of two first-half goals by Colin Wilson to defeat visiting Urbana, 2-1, in a Central Maryland Conference boys soccer game last night.

Brandon Franklin assisted on both goals for Liberty (9-0, 3-0), while Seth McPherson had the lone goal for the Hawks.

"We have been working on crosses, and I've been telling them to make the extra pass to the far post," said coach Ed DeVincent. "Colin crashed the post beautifully twice. We finished when we had the opportunities."

Urbana (5-3-1, 1-2), which lost to Howard County power River Hill by one goal, didn't give the Lions that many chances. Liberty made the most of them, though.

The Lions took the lead just a little over seven minutes in. Franklin found himself alone on the right side from about 30 yards out. From there, he struck a perfect cross to the wide side of the goal, which Wilson picked up in mid-stride. He fired a low hard shot past Urbana goalie Dan Mulcahy.

Liberty extended the lead with 5:51 left in the first half. The Lions had a partial breakaway, and Franklin stood unmarked near the center of the goal about 15 yards out. As an Urbana defender converged on him, Franklin saw Wilson open near the left goalpost. His shot caught Mulcahy out of position for a 2-0 lead.

Urbana closed the gap 13 minutes into the second half with McPherson's goal.
