Charlie's story `popped in my head'

Student achiever

October 03, 2001

The student: Charlie Sapienza, 7

School: Ilchester Elementary

Special achievement: One of five second-graders chosen to represent the school in the State of Maryland International Reading Association Young Authors' Writing Contest in December. Charlie wrote "Timmy's Pig," a story about a boy's longing to own a pet pig.

From "Timmy's Pig": "When can I get a pet," asked Timmy.

"When you are 10."

"B-b-b-b-b-but I am only 4," Timmy was screaming.

"Only six years," said his mother.

That night, Timmy couldn't stop thinking, "only 6 more years to go."

Where did Charlie get the idea for his story? A vivid imagination. "It just popped in my head."

What's his favorite part of writing? The satisfaction of a job well done. "I like that we get to put them up ... in the classroom sometimes, so everybody can see it. It kind of feels good inside."
