Miles & Stockbridge and Venable, Baetjer and Howard, two of Baltimore's most venerable law firms, announced new leadership yesterday.

Miles & Stockbridge reached within its ranks and named John H. Murray of the law firm's Easton office as president, succeeding Joseph S. Welty.

Welty, president for 6 1/2 years, will resume his full-time law practice and continue to serve on the board of directors.

He said of Murray: "John's professional knowledge and years of managerial experience will prove successful for the firm."

Lowell R. Brown, the firm's chairman, said, "Like Joe, John is respected for his business judgment and dedication to the firm."

Murray, a University of Virginia Law School graduate, joined Miles & Stockbridge in 1982 as an associate and became a principal in 1985. He has been managing principal of the Eastern Shore offices and a director of the firm since 1989.

Miles & Stockbridge is a 156-lawyer firm, with 94 lawyers based in Baltimore. Other offices include Cambridge, Columbia, Frederick, Rockville and Towson in Maryland; Tysons Corner in Virginia; and Washington.

At Venable, William S. Kwiatkowski Jr. was hired as chief operating officer. He comes from Greenberg Traurig, an 800- attorney firm based in Miami, where he was chief administrative officer.

Kwiatkowski, who will work out of Venable's Washington office - which is now its largest - will have primary responsibility for day-to-day operations of the 420-attorney firm. Venable has about 140 lawyers in Baltimore.

The chief operating officer for the past three years, George Johnston, will resume his full-time work in employment law in 2002.

"We are very fortunate to have Bill join us as we undertake a series of strategic technology initiatives at Venable," said James. L. Shea, Venable's managing partner. "He understands how large firms operate, knows how to motivate people and shares our commitment to client service."

In addition to Baltimore and Washington, Venable has offices in Towson and Rockville in Maryland and McLean in Virginia.
