Student achiever

September 26, 2001

The student: Allison Hogan, 8

School: Ilchester Elementary

Special achievement: One of five second-graders chosen to represent the school in the Maryland International Reading Association Young Authors' Writing Contest in December. Allison was chosen for her story "The Knight and Dragon," which is her variation of a children's story. It begins, "Once upon a time, there lived a Knight that loved to fight dragons. In a nearby cave, there lived a dragon that loved to fight Knights. So, they sent each other a letter."

How did she come up with the idea? "Our media teacher read us a story of a ... knight and dragon," Allison said. "I just kind of wrote the opposite of it."

Was it difficult? Coming up with an ending was tough, she said. But after she wrote of a skillful fight between and the knight and dragon, she realized that her two characters would soon get tired. The story ends, "So, the knight and the dragon went home only to fight another day."
