Yankees update

Two teams moving in markedly different directions play a series stripped even of its sentimental value. Until Sept. 11, this was to be Cal Ripken's final homestand. Instead, it becomes an opportunity for the Yankees to clinch the AL East or the Orioles to reverse a 1-9 home skid dating to Aug. 16. The Yankees entered last night having won six straight and 11 of their last 12 to move a season-high 31 games over .500. Yankees starting pitchers entered last night 9-1 with a 2.69 ERA in their last 11 games. Mussina faces his former team while making a strong push for a place or show finish in Cy Young Award balloting. He ranks third in the league in ERA, tied for sixth in wins, eighth in innings pitched, third in strikeouts and first in strikeout/walk ratio. The Orioles are 2-11 against the Yankees this season with one of their wins coming in a 10-3 pounding of Mussina at Yankee Stadium on June 5.
