Community invited to Jewish service for mourning, solidarity

The Howard County Jewish community will hold a service of sharing and concern at 7 p.m. Sunday at Beth Shalom Congregation, 8070 Harriet Tubman Lane, Columbia.

The service, sponsored by the Howard County Board of Rabbis and the Jewish Federation of Howard County, is intended to provide an opportunity for the community to mourn and show solidarity for the victims of the terrorist attacks in New York and at the Pentagon and their families.

The community is invited to participate.

Spiritual center plans workshop on grief

The Bon Secours Spiritual Center, an extension of the ministry of the Sisters of Bon Secours, will offer a workshop, "Grief: On the Edge of Despair," from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 29 at the center, 1525 Marriottsville Road, Marriottsville.

The workshop addresses grief and presents techniques for finding strength and healing.

The cost is $45, which includes lunch. Registration is required as soon as possible.

Church schedules Fall Festival on Sunday

St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church will hold its Fall Festival from 2 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Sunday at 6004 Waterloo Road, Columbia.

The celebration of faith, community and ministry will include karaoke, bingo, face-painting, a Moon Bounce, cotton candy production and displays by the ministries of the church.

Registration will be accepted for church programs.

The rain date is Sept. 30.

Columbia Jewish school enrolling students

Columbia Jewish Community School is accepting registration for the 2001-2002 school year.

Classes in the Hebrew language and Judaic studies for children in kindergarten through 12th grade began Sunday at Oakland Mills High School in Columbia.

Unitarian congregation to hold forum on life stages

The Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Columbia will sponsor a forum, Life Stages: a Preview, from 10:30 a.m. to noon Sunday in Room 5 of Owen Brown Interfaith Center, 7246 Cradlerock Way, Columbia.

The forum will be a preview of a four-session Life Transitions Workshop, which will be held Monday evenings in October.

Topics will include raising children, adolescence, midlife and aging.

Two-part session examines extraordinary marriages

St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Parish in Columbia and Columbia Baptist Fellowship will sponsor a two-part workshop for couples, The Secrets of Extraordinary Marriages, from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. today and Sept. 28 at Wilde Lake Interfaith Center, 10431 Twin Rivers Road, Columbia.

Admission is free, but registration is required.

Jewish groups slate memorial at cemetery

The Hebrew Young Men's Association and Beth Shalom Congregation of Columbia will hold memorial services at 10 a.m. Sunday at Beth Shalom Hebrew Young Men's Cemetery, 5830 Windsor Mill Road, Baltimore, for families and friends of those who are buried in the cemetery.

Rabbi Jacob Max and Cantor Richard Walters will conduct the service.

Benediction, exposition of Eucharist set at friary

The Franciscan Friars of St. Joseph Cupertino Friary will offer a Eucharistic exposition, adoration and benediction of the Blessed Sacrament during Evening Prayer (Vesper Service) at 3 p.m. Sunday.

There will be an opportunity for private veneration of the relic of St. Anthony after the service.

The friary is at 12290 Folly Quarter Road, Ellicott City.

Jewish Sunday school accepting registration

The Calah and Shalom Aleichem congregations are accepting registration for their Sunday school's 2001-2002 school year.

The unaffiliated Jewish school meets twice a month.

Music, arts and crafts, Hebrew, holiday observances and Jewish rituals and values are included in the curriculum.

Classes, which began this month, meet twice monthly at Florence Bain Senior Center in Columbia.
