Athletes of the Week

Shane Stroup

River Hill, cross country

The 5-foot-8 senior clocked a time of 16 minutes, 32.95 seconds to win the Howard County Striders Invitational 5K at Centennial. For Stroup, the time was a full eight seconds faster than the next competitor, who happened to be defending Howard County and defending Class 1A state champ Izudin Mehmedovic.

In victory, Stroup captured his first cross country invitational title - he was fourth at states last fall - and only his second cross country triumph over Mehmedovic. His time established a course record and was a personal best by 22 seconds. Stroup's best performances are in track, where last year he was named The Baltimore Sun's All-Metro Performer of the Year both in indoor and outdoor competition.

Mairead Gordon

John Carroll, soccer

The junior forward compiled seven points last week, including the game-winner in the North Carroll Tournament championship, to lead the No. 4 Patriots (5-1) to a total of four victories.

At Saturday's tournament, Gordon contributed a goal and two assists in a 4-1 semifinal win over then-No. 7 Glenelg and then scored the deciding goal in the come-from-behind 2-1 title victory over then-No. 9 Centennial.

Earlier in the week, she also had an assist in each of two Patriots IAAM A Conference victories - 2-1 over Mercy and 3-0 over Catholic.

A versatile player who also spends time at midfield and defense, Gordon leads the team with seven points.
