Fire company plans service for victims of attacks

Hampstead Volunteer Fire Company will hold a memorial service for the victims of last week's terrorist attacks.

The service will be held at 7 p.m. tomorrow in the fire hall, 1341 N. Main St.

The 45-minute service will include a eulogy for firefighters and police officers lost during rescue operations in Manhattan. Speakers will include Robert Rill, president of Hampstead Volunteer Fire Company, and Hampstead Police Chief Kenneth Meekins.

Scripture readings and prayers will be led by area church leaders.

The service will be open to the community. Churches wishing to participate may call to be included, said the Rev. Doug Tocknell, pastor of Greenmount United Methodist Church and assistant chaplain to the Hampstead fire company.

Tocknell and Bayard Bollinger, fire department lay chaplain, are organizing the service.

Square dance club to hold open house today

Carroll Promenaders, a modern western square dance club, will hold an open house from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. today and Sept. 26 at North Carroll High School for family, friends and anyone interested in trying square dancing.

Doren McBroom will be the caller.

These first two lessons are free. Lessons are held weekly for $3. Carroll Promenaders are affiliated with North Carroll Recreation Council.

St. George's Episcopal sets book discussion

St. George's Episcopal Church will hold a community study and discussion of the book The Meaning of Jesus by Marcus Borg and N.T. Wright.

The series will be held from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Thursdays starting tomorrow and should last most of the school year. The cost is $15 for the book.

Borg, a theologian, and Wright, a conservative, are Christian scholars.

Introduction to Internet among library offerings

North Carroll library branch, 2255 Hanover Pike, Greenmount, has scheduled programs this month.

"American Girls Night" for ages 7 to 10 will be held at 6:45 p.m. tomorrow. North Carroll High School Honor Society members will present American Girl stories, theater skits and crafts. Girls can take their dolls. Registration is required.

"Introduction to the Internet" for adults starting to use the Internet will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday.

"Game Day" for all ages will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday. North Carroll High School Honor Society members will lead games and award prizes.

North Carroll Book Club for adults will meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday to discuss Girl With a Pearl Earring by Tracy Chevalier.

"Enter the Magic Treehouse" for ages 4 to 10 will be held at 6:45 p.m. Sept. 27. Children will hear stories of Jack and Annie and their adventures with pirates, mummies and volcanoes.

North Carroll Book Discussion Group for ages 9 to 12 will meet at 6:45 p.m. Oct. 8 to discuss A Year Down Yonder by Richard Peck. Registration is required.
