Oakland Mills seeks teen adviser candidates

The Oakland Mills Village Board seeks candidates for its nonvoting teen adviser position. The successful candidate will be appointed for a year and is charged with keeping the board informed about teen issues and concerns.

The position offers opportunities for volunteer service, experience at a grass-roots level of government and an understanding of the needs and interactions of the community.

Decorated: Army Capt. Seth D. O'Brien, whose wife, Megan, is the daughter of Jack J. and Nancy Malchak of Kings Contrivance, has been decorated with the Army Commendation Medal. He is a flight surgeon assigned to the 1st Battalion, 25th Aviation Regiment at Wheeler Army Airfield, Oahu, Hawaii.

Exercise: Long Reach Community Association will offer exercise classes for children, adults, senior citizens and those with limited mobility, injuries or disabilities. The classes incorporate yoga, tai chi, stretching and meditation. Information: 410-730-8113.

Strength training: Long Reach Community Association offers a strength-training class for adults from 5:15 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. Thursdays. The class began last week. The cost is $4 for the six-week class. Those who live on Columbia Association-assessed property will receive a 5 percent discount. Information: 410-730- 8113.

You can draw: Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks will sponsor a 12-week class, "You Can Draw and Paint," from 9:15 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. Fridays, beginning this week, at the East Columbia 50+ Center, 6600 Cradlerock Way. The class is open to beginners and advanced students. Students should bring watercolors, acrylics, oils, pastels or other materials. Materials will be discussed at the first class. Ice cream party: Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks will sponsor an ice cream party for senior citizens from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sept. 28 at Longwood Apartments in Long Reach village. The event will commemorate the awarding of the patent for the ice cream cone mold at the beginning of the 20th century. Refreshments and entertainment will be featured. The cost is $2. Volunteers sought: Howard County Department of Citizen Services' Office on Aging is seeking volunteers to help with programs, games and lunch at Longwood Apartments Senior Center, 6150 Foreland Garth. Belly dancing: Long Reach Community Association offers belly dancing classes Mondays. Classes are held from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. for beginners and from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. for advanced students.
