Tutors Needed

Area schools and literacy programs seek volunteers to help children and adults improve reading skills and to assist with related projects. Among them:

The Dorothy Day After-School Reading Program at Viva House, 28 S. Mount St., Baltimore, seeks volunteer tutors to work one-on-one with third-, fourth- and fifth-graders throughout the school year. Volunteers are asked to commit to tutor every Tuesday from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Information: Shannon Curran, 410-947-2660.

Pact: Helping Children With Special Needs, 7000 Tudsbury Road, Baltimore County, needs tutors for a newly formed literacy program for adults with mild mental retardation. Tutors will receive continuing support while they provide one-on-one daytime tutoring. Information: Bernadette Irwin, 410-298-2645.

Anne Arundel County Literacy Council, 7310 Ritchie Highway, Suite 603, Glen Burnie, is seeking adults to be trained as reading tutors for elementary and middle school-age children at centers to be established throughout the county. Information: Laura Knickman, 410-553-0809.
