Blue Jays update

The Blue Jays suddenly find themselves challenging the Boston Red Sox for second place in the division while making a run at .500. One of four American League teams with a better road than home record, the Blue Jays swept the Orioles in Toronto Aug. 3-5 by a cumulative 17-6. The Orioles haven't been right since and enter a seven-game homestand 1-9 in their past 10 games at Camden Yards. The Orioles have won consecutive home games once since June 19. The Orioles have averaged 3.2 runs in 13 games against the Blue Jays while managing a feeble .318 on-base percentage. The Orioles have pitched ably against them, surrendering a 4.06 ERA, their second-lowest against an AL opponent. However, in eight losses to Toronto they've suffered three one-run defeats and been held to one run or shut out six times. Tonight's opener features state comptroller William Donald Schaefer and the "Maryland Tax Guys" throwing out the first pitch in "celebration" of tax amnesty. Talk about a promotion, especially with Canada represented.
