Annual jazz festival in Chestertown

Journey to the Eastern Shore Saturday and celebrate African-American culture at the sixth annual Chestertown Jazz Festival in Wilmer Park. From noon to 6 p.m. you can swing to jazz performed by the Fred Foss Jazz Youth Orchestra, the Keter Betts Quartet, Giacomo Gates, the Ron Holloway Trio and the Uptown Vocal Jazz Quartet. Crafts and food are available. While visiting Chestertown, also stop at nearby Fountain Park from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday for "Art in the Park," featuring original paintings, prints, crafts, children's activities and soft jazz.

Wilmer Park is along the banks of the Chester River. Tickets for the jazz festival are $5 and $10. Call 410-778-3831. Fountain Park is on High Street. The arts festival is free. Call 410-778-5789.

National Book Festival; Kennedy open house

Spend the weekend in Washington and browse among books Saturday at America's first National Book Festival on the east lawn of the U.S. Capitol and enjoy performances by artists from across the nation Sunday at the 17th annual Kennedy Center Open House.

The book festival, emceed by first lady Laura Bush and sponsored by the Library of Congress, includes readings and book signings by more than 40 award-winning authors and illustrators of books for adults and children. Musical performances, storytelling, panel discussions, demonstrations of illustrations and new technologies and tours of the Library of Congress are also part of the festivities.

The Kennedy Center Open House features more than 30 artists and performance groups on several stages indoors and outdoors. The six hours of entertainment include dance, theater and music - many especially designed for children. Members of the Washington Opera and the National Symphony Orchestra will present family performances. There's also an Instrument Petting Zoo, where children can try out various instruments.
