The Naval Academy is expected to name Chet Gladchuk as its new athletic director at a news conference this morning on campus.

Gladchuk has been the athletic director at the University of Houston since 1997 and recently completed the fourth year of a six-year contract. He had been targeted as Navy's top choice the past few weeks, The (Annapolis) Capital reported recently.

He would succeed Jack Lengyel, who announced his retirement July 16 after 13 seasons at the helm of Navy's 30-sport program. Lengyel's retirement is effective Oct. 1.

A Massachusetts native, Gladchuk has held the same position at Tulane and his alma mater, Boston College, where he lettered in football.

Academy officials, who announced today's news conference, have declined to comment on the search for Lengyel's replacement, but a Houston television station reported last week that salary was a sticking point in the negotiations with Gladchuk.
