Anne Heches marries Laffoon Saturday

Actress Anne Heche, 32, married cameraman Coleman Laffoon, 27, on Saturday during a ceremony held at a villa near downtown Los Angeles, according to the Associated Press.

The couple met while Heche was making a documentary about then-girlfriend Ellen DeGeneres' return to stand-up comedy, following the cancellation of her ABC sitcom Ellen.

Heche and DeGeneres parted ways in August of last year, after having been together for three years.

Hope remains in hospital

Comedian Bob Hope will remain in the hospital for at least a few more days as he fights to recover from pneumonia, his physician said yesteraday.

"Although Mr. Hope remains in stable condition and there is continuing improvement, because of his age we want him good and strong before we send him home," said Dr. Lee Kagan.

Hope, 98, entered Providence St. Joseph Medical Center in Burbank on Aug. 26 having trouble breathing. He was later diagnosed with mild pneumonia.

Rest, rest and more rest

The upside to heart surgery is loafing, writes author and humorist Garrison Keillor.

"It is a lovely life, doing nothing," writes Keillor, 59, in an essay in Time magazine's Sept. 10 edition.

"Bipolar depression is a downer and tuberculosis makes your friends nervous and a hip replacement is terribly inconvenient, but cardiac surgery ... is the Get Out of Work card."

Keillor underwent the operation July 25 at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.

Attention in Venice

While films by Steven Spielberg and Woody Allen have had the lion's share of attention at this year's Venice Film Festival, two young female directors are also giving the United States a strong showing.

Katherine Lindberg's out-of-competition Rain and Jill Sprecher's 13 Conversations About One Tihing, which is competing for a Golden Lion award, both received favorable reviews after screening Sunday.

Produced by Martin Scorsese, Rain is an Oedipus-complex drama about the self-destruction of a family in small-town America.

In 13 Conversations About One Thing," starring Matthew McConaughey, five people - an attorney, a wife with an unfaithful husband, a middle-aged man, an envious business man, and an optimistic cleaning lady - search for true happiness in five separate stories.
