Athletics update

Oakland just keeps on rolling, increasing its wild-card lead to eight games over Boston. The Orioles will miss Mark Mulder, who went the distance yesterday to defeat Tampa Bay, 3-1. But Hudson and Zito bring enough challenges. Hudson overcame six walks to defeat the Orioles, 4-1, on Wednesday, and Zito was impenetrable in the next night's 15-0 win that completed a sweep at Camden Yards. The A's lost two of three to the Orioles at home back in early June, with Towers blanking them over seven innings in a 7-0 win. He took the loss Wednesday, allowing four runs in seven innings. Just once, the Orioles would like to see an A's starter with an ERA above 4.00. They'd like to see less of third baseman Eric Chavez, who hit three homers off them last week. Chavez drove in eight runs in Thursday's rout, including a grand slam off Alan Mills that almost pushed him into retirement.
