DeMatha vs. Gilman Site: Johns Hopkins (Homewood Field)

Time: 7 p.m.

Tickets: $5 (proceeds go to the Children's Oncology Center at Johns Hopkins)

Outlook: For the second straight season, the three-time Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference champion Greyhounds open with Washington-area power DeMatha. But the Stags, defending champs in the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference, are anxious and well-equpped to avenge last year's 12-0 loss to Gilman. DeMatha RBs Elijah Brooks, who rushed for 1,100 yards and 18 TDs, and RB Anthony Williams each run the 40-yard dash in 4.5 seconds. OLs Matt Ashburn (6-2, 270) and Quinn Oginnoora (6-5, 290) and TE Paul Campitelli (6-4, 240) provide the openings. DeMatha DLs Kwame Lovell (6-7, 265), Brandon McAfee (6-2, 250) and Danny Orlebar (6-4, 250) represent an imposing front that is supported by LB Thaddeus Payton (6-2, 205) and four DBs whose average size is 6-feet tall, 195 pounds, and whose average speed is 4.5 seconds in the 40. Gilman's offense of QB Ambrose Wooden, who rushed for 13 TDs and passed for five more, and RBs Malcolm Ruff (16 TDs) and Duke-bound Mike Dowling (6-0, 230) will have its work cut out. DB-WR Napoleon Sykes, who is headed for Wake Forest, LB-TE Stan White (6-3, 230) and DE Victor Abiamiri (6-5, 240) will need to have excellent efforts against the Stags' high-powered offense.

Tomorrow

Good Counsel at Mount St. Joseph Time: 1 p.m.

Outlook: The Gaels are coming off a 46-41 victory over Steubenville (Ohio), a game in which junior QB Nick Tavis (18-for-26) passed for five TDs and 409 of Mount St. Joseph's 608 offensive yards. WR J. J. Outlaw had three scoring receptions and also returned a kickoff for a score, and Keon Lattimore, the younger brother of Ravens LB Ray Lewis, caught and rushed for TDs. The Gaels, who had no turnovers, also will return RB Isaac Kufour, who was out with a hip injury and will play only LB in the game, coach Mike Working said. Good Counsel is in its first year under legendary coach Bob Milloy, winner of eight public-school state titles at Sherwood and Springbrook. Milloy's nine-member staff includes former Gaithersburg coach John Harvill, who won two state titles. Good Counsel, which runs a wing-T, is led by RB Chris Peaks (195 pounds), OL Brian Rice (6-2, 300), LB Kevin Handy (190 pounds) and DE Brian Gallagher (6-1, 185).

The Sun's high school preview for fall sports will be published Tuesday. Coaches are reminded to call in results to 410-332-6200 or 800-829-8000, ext. 6200. Results also can be e-mailed to sports@baltsun.com.
