Body found floating in creek identified as Essex man, 18

ESSEX -- County police said yesterday that the man found floating in Norman Creek on Tuesday has been identified as Anthony Dwayne Mandley, 18.

The body of Mandley, of Sharondale Way in Essex, was pulled from the creek near the end of Katherine Avenue after it was spotted by a boater.

A preliminary autopsy conducted by the state medical examiner's office revealed that Mandley had drowned, a Department of Natural Resources spokesman said. Baltimore County and DNR police are continuing to investigate.

Ministries' youth branch schedules concert Sept. 1

OWINGS MILLS -- Words to Life Ministries' youth department will present a free outdoor gospel youth concert from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sept. 1 at 12 S. Tollgate Road.

Oregon Ridge needs guides for hikes, other activities

COCKEYSVILLE -- Oregon Ridge Nature Center, 13555 Beaver Dam Road, is seeking trail guides for its hikes and activities.

Training for trail guides will be offered from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 4-7 at the center. The sessions cost $10 a day but the fee will be refunded after a new guide leads a hike. Information: 410-887-1815.

Open house set Sept. 15 at Bykota Senior Center

TOWSON -- Bykota Senior Center, 611 Central Ave., will hold a multigenerational open house from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 15.

The event will offer free health screenings, information about services of the Baltimore County Department of Aging, food and entertainment.

Southeastern District opens Fells Point substation

The Police Department's Southeastern District opened its 13th substation yesterday, housed in an office in Fells Point that was donated by a church.

"The new substation at 301 S. Broadway -- formerly owned by Pentecostal Church of Evangelical Mission -- underscores the importance of positive relationships between the police and the growing numbers of Hispanic citizens who reside in Fells Point," said Agent Angelique Cook-Hayes, a police spokeswoman.

Jose Ruiz, who serves as Mayor Martin O'Malley's Hispanic liaison, said, "The opening of the substation is representative of the Police Department's commitment in addressing crime issues in the Upper Fells Point and Broadway corridor."

Unidentified man found slain in Clifton Park

Police were investigating early today the slaying of an unidentified man whose body was found by an officer shortly before midnight in Clifton Park.

A Northeastern District officer was patrolling the park about 11:30 p.m. near Indian Head Drive when he discovered the body lying a short distance from tennis courts.

A preliminary examination of the body at the scene by homicide detectives indicated a gunshot or stab wound, police said, adding that the body was taken to the state medical examiner's office for an autopsy and possible identification through fingerprints.

Learning center accepting adult students for fall classes

South Baltimore Learning Center is enrolling adult students for its fall semester.

Classes in adult basic education, pre-General Educational Development and GED instruction are available at three locations -- 28 E. Ostend St. in South Baltimore, the Brooklyn branch of the Enoch Pratt Free Library and Harbor Hospital's Life Resource Center near Cherry Hill. One-on-one tutoring also is available for adult beginning readers.

Classes and tutoring are free, but GED classes cost $35. Classes will run Sept. 5 through Dec. 7. Information: 410-625-4215.

Women's equality dinner set for Sunday at Cafe Zen

The third annual Women's Equality Day Dinner and Celebration will be held at 5:30 p.m. Sunday at Cafe Zen restaurant, 438 E. Belvedere Ave.

Sponsored by the Baltimore National Organization for Women's Equal Rights Act Task Force and Maryland ERA Campaign Network, the dinner recognizes a date -- Aug. 26 -- designated 30 years ago to honor women's achievements.
