What to watch for

August 23, 2001|By Jamison Hensley

Position: Offensive line. This unit has lost left tackle Jonathan Ogden (sprained right ankle), left guard Edwin Mulitalo (sprained right knee and ankle) and right tackle Leon Searcy (torn tendon in left arm), and only center Mike Flynn remains at his projected starting spot. The team will be watching the right side, where guard Bennie Anderson and tackle Sammy Williams could be the future tandem.

Veteran: Backup quarterback Chris Redman. The third-round pick in 2000 didn't live up to expectations in his first extended game action in a year. He needs to shake off the rust to justify his spot as the No. 2 man behind Elvis Grbac.

Rookie: Defensive end Dwayne Missouri. His special teams play will make or break his roster chances. Missouri has formed a stronger case to stay by making strides on special teams this week.

On the bubble: Fullback Alan Ricard. He's shown a better understanding of the offense, but he needs to prove his worth on kick- and punt-coverage teams. His ability to block on punt returns also will boost his stock.
