Texas Boy Scouts to perform dances of American Indians at high school

July 18, 2001

The Kwahadi Indian Dancers of Amarillo, Texas, will perform at 7:30 p.m. July 25 at Glen Burnie High School, 7550 Baltimore-Annapolis Blvd.

The dance troupe, with a cast of more than 40 Boy Scouts ages 11 to 18, is known for its interpretations of Native American art and culture.

The troupe will perform the shield dance, which highlights the importance of teachings from elders, the flag or soldier-honoring dance, which salutes those who have preserved freedom, and the belt dance, honoring the families. The company also will perform the hoop dance, designed to encourage youngsters to rise above obstacles, and eagle dances meant to encourage young people to set goals.

The troupe, which was founded in 1944, has presented more than 3,000 performances in 41 states and abroad.

Proceeds of the performance will support local Scouting activities and the remainder of the Kwahadi Dancers' summer tour.

Tickets are $5 and are available at the door. Information: www.kwahadi.com.
