A Columbia woman died yesterday after an accident involving four cars on Route 175, just outside the Patuxent Institution in Jessup.
Doris Adu, 46, of the 6100 block of Starburn Path was pronounced dead at Howard County General Hospital, where she was taken after her eastbound Fort Escort collided head-on with an Acura Legend about 8:30 a.m., Howard County police said.
Adu had swerved across the center line to avoid a Toyota Corolla that was stopped on Route 175 to make a legal left turn into Patuxent Institution, police said.
A westbound Pontiac Bonneville driven by Susan Crawford, 49, of the 100 block of Kent Point Road in Stevensville hit the rear of the Acura as it collided with the Ford, police said.
Crawford was taken to Howard County General, where she was treated for minor injuries and released, a hospital spokeswoman said.
The driver of the Acura, Sharon Hart, 30, of the 1800 block of Whitby Court in Annapolis, also was taken to Howard County General, where she was treated for minor injuries and released, the spokeswoman said.
The Toyota was not affected by the accident, and its driver, April Coccagna-Graham, 38, of the 6500 block of Langdale Road in Baltimore, was not injured, police said.
There were no passengers in any of the cars, and police did not issue any citations.
Two other fatal accidents have occurred in Howard County since May. Last month, Danny Ong, 17, of North Laurel died on the last day of school when his car crashed into a telephone pole on Harriet Tubman Lane in Columbia.
An elderly couple, Virginia and James Womack of Anne Arundel County, died May 1 when their pickup turned into oncoming traffic on Route 32 in West Friendship.
