Road closings, restrictions on parking made for Artscape

July 13, 2001

Traffic and parking restrictions will be in effect today through the weekend as Baltimore's Artscape celebration takes over the streets around the Maryland Institute, College of Art's Mount Royal Station.

Streets closed through 6:30 a.m. Monday are Preston Street from Maryland Avenue to Howard Street; Cathedral Street from Preston to Mount Royal Avenue; and Mount Royal from Charles Street to North Avenue, although access will be maintained to University of Baltimore parking lots, the Meyerhoff garage and Artscape vendor areas.

Parking will be banned, and cars towed, from Mount Royal Avenue between Lafayette Avenue and McMechen Street.

Detours will be in effect on Charles Street, with northbound traffic directed east on Mount Royal to Calvert Street and west on North Avenue; Cathedral, where northbound traffic will be directed east on Biddle Street to Calvert and then North Avenue; and Preston with westbound traffic sent south on Maryland, then west on Chase Street and north on Howard.

Mount Royal will also have detours, with northbound traffic directed onto Calvert to North Avenue; and southbound traffic directed east on North Avenue and south on St. Paul Street.

The city Department of Public Works, in announcing the Artscape restrictions, added that Charles Street motorists using the detour of Mount Royal to Maryland to Lanvale Street, due to construction on the Charles Street bridges, should use the detour of Mount Royal to Calvert to Lanvale to access Charles Street.
