Phillies update

The surprising Phillies enter their last series of the first half trying to retain first place in the NL East following a three-game showdown against Atlanta. Before last night's 9-5 loss, they had won six of seven after the Braves passed them briefly last week. The Phillies had the National League's best record for part of last month but have recently struggled on the road. They battered their interleague "rival" for a .395 average, eight home runs and 36 runs in winning two games of a three-game series June 15-17. The same three starters who saw the Phillies in Philadelphia face them this weekend. A seeming mismatch for the Phillies tonight is actually an opportunity for the Orioles, however. Daal enters having suffered a 9.64 ERA his last four starts. Middle reliever Wayne Gomes has returned, giving the Phillies a more balanced look in the bullpen. The Orioles are 6-3 at Camden Yards and 13-8 overall against the Phillies since interleague play began. -- Joe Strauss
