A brief but powerful storm ripped through the Baltimore area early last night, cutting off power to residents and knocking down trees.

Heavy rain and gusty winds hit the city about 7 p.m. By 9:30 p.m., about 18,400 city customers were without electrical power, according to Karl Neddenien, a spokesman for Constellation Energy Group, parent company of Baltimore Gas and Electric Co.

A funnel cloud was seen on radar about 7 p.m. near Woodlawn. It did not touch down, Baltimore County officials said.

In Carroll County, 3,600 people lost electrical power. The other outages were scattered throughout the area, Neddenien said.

A woman avoided injury when another storm knocked down a tree onto her car west of Cambridge, Dorchester County authorities said.
