Pipe bomb blast is latest case of mailbox vandalism

July 05, 2001

The state fire marshal is investigating several reports of mailbox vandalism, including the detonation of a pipe bomb in a Sykesville mailbox this week.

A bomb that was apparently homemade exploded late Sunday or early Monday in a mailbox in the first block of Roosevelt Road, said Ted Meminger, the state fire marshal's office regional commander in Westminster. No one was injured.

Fire marshals have received nearly a dozen reports of mailbox vandalism since April, including another pipe bomb explosion on Bear Branch Road and the burning of several mailboxes.

Anyone with information about the vandalism is asked to call the state fire marshal's arson hot line at 800-492-7529.
