TOWSON -- A Dundalk man charged with first-degree murder in the death of his roommate, who was beaten with an ax handle Saturday, surrendered to police Sunday night.
Brett Eric Hoernlein, 25, is being held at the Baltimore County Detention Center without bail.
Police believe Hoernlein, of the 6800 block of Dunbar Road, beat Michael Krumbine, 45, "with a large wooden ax handle" as he slept on a couch, according to court documents. The two men had frequent disagreements, court documents said.
Board of Education meetings moved up half an hour today
TOWSON -- The Baltimore County Board of Education's building committee will meet at 3:30 p.m. today instead of 4 p.m. as originally scheduled. Also, the board will meet for its regularly scheduled meeting at 4:30 p.m. instead of 5 p.m.

School to receive $150,000 for multimedia equipment
OVERLEA -- Overlea High School will receive a grant of $150,000 in Baltimore County funds to buy multimedia production equipment.
County Councilman Joseph Bartenfelder and County Executive C. A. Dutch Ruppersberger will announce the grant at 10 a.m. today at the high school, 5401 Kenwood Ave.
Overlea students will use the equipment to produce live radio and video announcements.
Police HotSpot team plans picnic for families Saturday
WOODLAWN -- Families in the Woodmoor and Scotts Branch communities are invited to a picnic at Gwynn Oak Park on Saturday.
Sponsored by the Baltimore County Police Department's HotSpot team, the picnic will include a magic show and a self-defense exhibition. The HotSpot program is a community policing effort that focuses on helping youngsters and fighting juvenile crime, substance abuse and domestic violence.

Tutoring available in math, special education, reading
Individual and small-group tutoring in a number of subjects is available beginning the week of June 25 at three area centers.
Each summer, the nonprofit Remedial Education and Counseling Help, or REACH, program makes available teachers certified in reading, special education and math. SAT preparation also is available.

`Movies in the Park' planned in Belair-Edison
Belair-Edison Neighborhoods Inc. is again presenting free "Movies in the Park" this summer in Herring Run Park, 3900 Belair Road.
The films begin at dusk three Fridays: July 13, Aug. 10 and Sept. 14. Concessions and a raffle will be featured.
