Inmate, 37, stabbed 10 times during fight at state prison annex

A 37-year-old inmate at the Maryland House of Correction Annex in Jessup was hospitalized yesterday after being stabbed 10 times by another prisoner, authorities said.

The inmate - who was not immediately identified by Division of Correction officials -was flown to Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore.

A 24-year-old inmate, serving a 37-year term for murder, was being questioning about the attack, officials said.

Officers found an 8-inch prison-made knife in the dayroom of the housing unit where the fight broke out about 4:30 p.m., said state prisons spokesman David B. Towers.

Annapolis police to hold open house at new center

The Annapolis Police Department will hold a "Community Day Open House" from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday at its new Victim/Witness Assistance Center at 2001 West St.

The event will coincide with a neighborhood Block Watch party.

Officer Maria Johnson, a 13-year police veteran, will oversee the center as head of the department's assistance and referral unit.

The initiative is aimed at addressing the perception of crime victims and witnesses that their interests or needs are deemed a low priority by authorities, police said.

Hitchhiker takes man's car after getting ride from city

A Brooklyn man was dragged several hundred feet hanging onto his car yesterday morning after being forced out of the vehicle along an industrial road south of the Baltimore City-Anne Arundel County line by a hitchhiker he had given a lift, county police reported.

Jay Wagner Jr., 59, of Patapsco Avenue told police he was heading to the county when he picked up a man on Pennington Avenue in the city's Curtis Bay area and agreed to drive him to Solley Road.

The report said the hitchhiker forced Wagner out of the car on Stahl Point Road and drove off with the 1997 Chevrolet Cavalier - last seen headed back toward Curtis Bay.

Anyone with information about the incident was asked to call the county police at 410-222-6135.
