Rangers update

There's no mystery why Texas remains in last place in the American League West: The 6.24 staff ERA going into last night was killing the club. It already led to manager Johnny Oates' departure. The Rangers also were next-to-last in fielding percentage at .977. Their .279 batting average ranked second in the AL, and their 72 home runs were tops, but being one-dimensional is no way to win a division. Before last night's 9-3 win over the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, the Rangers were 16-29, matching the worst start in franchise history. They had lost 12 of 16, 17 of 22, 19 of 25 and 23 of 32. They are 6-12 under Jerry Narron, who replaced Oates. Shortstop Alex Rodriguez ranks among the league leaders with a .330 average, 17 homers and 47 RBIs. He is hitting .407 (22-for-54) with seven homers, 20 RBIs and 16 runs in his past 13 games.
