Division III semifinals

Middlebury (15-0) vs. Mary Washington (15-4)

Site: Homewood Field, Johns Hopkins

Time: 11:30 a.m.

Rankings: Middlebury, No. 1; Mary Washington, No. 6.

Outlook: The last time Middlebury came to Homewood Field for a final four, the Vermont school won its only national championship. That was 1999, and this year's team is looking to match that squad's 17-0 record. The Panthers play a stifling zone defense and are led on attack by Betsy Wheeler (52 goals, 14 assists) and Julia Bergofsky (36, 21). The tournament-tested Panthers face a first-time matchup with a final four newcomer. However, their opponents from Fredericksburg, Va., may have whatever home-field advantage is available because of seven players from the Baltimore area. The Eagles also boast strong defense, anchored by goalie Heather Carter (Liberty), who is allowing just 8.5 goals a game. Westminster alumna Bridget Geiman leads the attack with 69 goals and 27 assists.

Amherst (16-2) vs. College of New Jersey (12-1)

Site: Homewood Field, Johns Hopkins Time: 2 p.m.

Rankings: Amherst, No. 2; College of New Jersey, No. 3.

Outlook: The defending champion College of New Jersey has won 10 of the 15 Division III titles awarded -- seven of the past 10. But Amherst has given the Lions a lot of trouble recently. The Lions have lost just two of 60 games over the past four years -- both to Amherst. Two years ago at Homewood Field, the Jeffs beat the Lions in the national semifinal before falling to Middlebury in the final. In March, the Jeffs edged the Lions, 8-7, to end a 121-game regular-season win streak. The Jeffs have the game's only local connection, defensive midfielder Molly O'Connor (Friends), and are led offensively by Kristin Osborn (58, 24). Liz O'Connor (53, 21) and Tara Prindible (33, 9) pace the Lions.
