LAYTONSVILLE - Chip Sullivan and John Stone, friendly Middle Atlantic PGA rivals for most of the last decade, earned the two available places for section members in Kemper Insurance Open qualifying at Montgomery Country Club yesterday.

Sullivan, head professional at Ashley Plantation in Roanoke, Va., birdied the last three holes for a 5-under-par 67 on the 6,686-yard layout. This turned out to be one stroke in front of Stone, the teaching pro at Newport News (Va.) Golf Club who birdied two of the last three holes for 68.

The PGA's Kemper event will be held next week at TPC-Avenel in Potomac. It will be the second one for Sullivan, who was exempt in 1997 when he shot 75-75 and missed the cut. It will be Stone's first appearance.

Sullivan, 36, a one-time PGA Tour member and winner last year of three individual MAPGA championships plus two team events, ended with seven birdies and two bogeys. One of Sullivan's team titles last year came with Stone.

Stone, 33, a persistent challenger of Sullivan, had six birdies and two bogeys. At No. 18, Stone's 82-yard sand wedge shot stopped right at the cup for a tap-in birdie, a stroke he needed when pursuer Rick Schuller, himself a former Kemper entrant, birdied the hole for 35-34-69.

An open Kemper qualifier will be held at Little Bennett GC in Montgomery County on Monday for the field's final four places.
