Overstreet honored for work to save bay

Susan Overstreet, an employee of the Howard County Department of Planning and Zoning, has earned a governor's citation for her efforts to restore and protect the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. The award is often called the "Stream Hero" award.

Director of FIRN lauded for achievements

Gary Hughes, executive director of the Foreign-born Information & Referral Network (FIRN), was honored April 24 by the Equal Business Opportunity Committee of the Howard County Economic Development Authority.

The committee recognizes minorities, women and disabled people who have achieved exceptional success in their fields and those who demonstrate the advantages of equal business opportunity for everyone.

William Betch to lead Encompass plumbing dept.

William Betch, a 16-year veteran at the Central Maryland office of Encompass in Columbia, formerly Central Air, has been named plumbing department manager by company founder and President Stephen C. Smith Sr. Betch replaces Smith's son, Stephen C. Smith Jr., who was recently promoted to CEO at the firm.

Betch joined the company in 1985 after graduating from Glen Burnie Senior High School.
