Service to honor firefighters who died in the line of duty

TOWSON -- The Baltimore County Fire Department will hold a memorial ceremony Sunday to honor firefighters who were killed in the line of duty.

The ceremony will be held at 2 p.m. at the Fire Service Memorial Monument in the Towson Courthouse Square.

Robert Humphrey of Maryland Line Volunteer Fire Company is the last county firefighter to have been killed on duty. He was struck by a vehicle while attempting to give aid at the site of an accident on Interstate 83 on Sept. 17, 2000.

Fire company to hold open house Saturday

REISTERSTOWN -- Reisterstown Volunteer Fire Company will hold an open house from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at 108 Main St.

The event will feature food, games, and demonstrations in seat belt, bicycle and child seat safety. Firefighters will demonstrate rescue procedures at 1 p.m. Information: 410-833-1370.

Forum tonight to focus on federal role in education

OWINGS MILLS -- Rep. Benjamin L. Cardin and state Superintendent of Schools Nancy S. Grasmick will hold a town hall meeting tonight to discuss the federal role in education.

The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at Owings Mills High School, 124 S. Tollgate Road.

Preakness Crab Derby set at Lexington Market

The 11th annual Preakness Crab Derby is planned for 12:15 p.m. Thursday at Lexington Market. The light-hearted crab race is one of a series of events building toward Saturday's running of the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course.

The derby features local celebrities jockeying and cajoling blue crabs toward the finish line.

The winner receives a $500 purse, which goes to the charity of his or her choice.

Lawmaker will announce art contest winner tonight

Rep. Elijah E. Cummings will hold a reception from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. today at Baltimore Museum of Art to unveil the winner of the 7th Congressional District of Maryland Art Competition.

The 20th annual competition, "An Artistic Discovery," is part of a national contest. Artwork from local contests will be displayed in a pedestrian tunnel that connects the House of Representatives to the Capitol.

Craft and food show set in Southwest Baltimore

A craft and food show featuring products made by Southwest Baltimore residents will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. June 2 on South Poppleton Street between Hollins and West Lombard streets.

The first Emerging Entrepreneurs Craft and Food Show is being spearheaded by Mercy Southwest Alliance and funded by the Baltimore Community Foundation. It intends to let neighborhood small businesses and entrepreneurs display products and hone business skills.

"We hope that the [event] can be a vehicle for people to realize the full potential of their entrepreneurial spirit and become engaged in a program that will build on their existing skills as business people," said Nancy Van Horn, acting chairwoman of Mercy Southwest Alliance's board of directors.
