Atholton's Ashley Wall was the toast of the first day of the Howard County track meet, as the senior jumper won the long jump and tied a county record with a victory in the high jump, helping the Raiders score 44 points, only one behind host Long Reach.

Wall, a 2A-1A state champion high-jumper during the indoor track season, jumped 5 feet, 7 inches yesterday, tying the county record set by Mona Jackson of Howard in 1995. But Wall wasn't done, winning the long jump in the last event of the day with a leap of 17 feet, 8 inches. Rolanda Howard of Long Reach finished second with a jump of 17-4.

On the boys' side, Oakland Mills experienced both the good and the bad. The Scorpions got a nice victory out of distance runner Izudin Mehmedovic, who captured a gold medal in the 3200 with a time of 9:45.30, just ahead of Matt Saunders of Mount Hebron. And the Scorpions also easily won the 800-meter relay, running a 1:29.60, three seconds ahead of runner-up Wilde Lake.

However, Oakland Mills suffered a setback in its title hopes when Chris Barksdale had to withdraw from the 200-meter semifinals because of dehydration.

The Wilde Lake boys took the first-day lead with 43 points, three points ahead of Oakland Mills. Junior Andrew Heath pole-vaulted 12 feet for the Wildecats.

River Hill won the boys and girls 3200 relays, and Lee McDuff placed first in the 3200. Mike Zyvoloski of Long Reach was first in the boys shot put and Lindsay Grigoriev of Atholton won the girls.-- Kevin Van Valkenburg
