Deputies wound driver in armed confrontation

Frederick County sheriff's deputies shot a Mount Airy man yesterday after he pointed a handgun at one of them while they were investigating a car stopped along Interstate 70, authorities said.

Sheriff's deputies said the man appeared to be sleeping behind the wheel with an open container of beer in his hand.

When they asked him for a license and registration, he pulled a handgun out of the glove compartment and pointed at one of them, authorities said.

Both deputies fired, and the man fled, leading deputies on a chase through Montgomery and Howard counties, authorities said.

Russell Burgess, 27, of the 300 block of Watersville Road was treated for a wound to his right shoulder at Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore and released into custody, authorities said.
