Mount tops Quinnipiac for MAAC men's title

Warfield scores six goals, named MVP in 13-10 win

Josh Warfield scored six goals and added two assists en route to tournament MVP honors to lead Mount St. Mary's over Quinnipiac, 13-10, for the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men's lacrosse championship yesterday at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

The Mount (11-6) raced to a 7-0 lead against top-seeded Quinnipiac (14-2), the nation's highest-scoring team.

Warfield scored the Mount's first three goals, then fed Nick DeFelice (Towson) for the next two as the Mount took a 5-0 lead after 17 minutes. Bryan Cole tallied and then defenseman Sean Mahon scored his first goal of the season on a breakaway to put the Mount up 7-0 .

Quinnipiac went on a nine-goal run and held the Mountaineers scoreless for the next 25 minutes. Warfield stopped the onslaught, netting three consecutive goals to give Mount St. Mary's the lead, 10-9.

Western Maryland 13, Franklin & Marshall 10: The attack line of Tom Brown, Joe Ellis and Brett Sweeney accounted for 12 points to lead the Green Terror over the Diplomats in the ECAC Southern Division championship.

Women

No. 1 Maryland 14, Harvard 4: Allison Comito scored four goals and added an assist as Maryland (19-0), which was expected to play without several of its players due to suspensions for violating a team rule, cruised past Harvard (6-9) in Cambridge, Mass. Quinn Carney contributed three goals and two assists in the win.

Catonsville 19, Finger Lakes 8: Lindsy Muir and Jazell Granada each scored six goals as the Cardinals defeated the Lakers in the inaugural Women's Junior College Championship.
