Jewish group to hold writing competition and poetry reading

The Columbia Jewish Congregation will sponsor a poetry reading and writing contest at 7 p.m. tomorrow at The Meeting House, 5885 Robert Oliver Place, in the Columbia village of Oakland Mills.

Contestants, who will be judged on originality, poise and reading skill, will compete according to age groups.

Prizes include a $100 U.S. Savings Bond, a 6-inch television set, radios, a food basket and gift certificates for books, pizzas and a yogurt cake.

A $5 donation will be requested at the door. Refreshments will be served. Information: 410-309-4362

Md.'s Boychoir to perform today at Lutheran church

The Maryland State Boychoir, under the direction of Frank Cimino and Stephen Holmes, will perform at 7:30 today at Abiding Savior Lutheran Church, 10689 Owen Brown Road, Columbia.

The program will include works by Palestrina, Rutter, Handel and others, as well as spirituals, songs from Broadway musicals and a collection titled "Songs from Africa." A free-will offering will be requested. Information: 410- 997-8770.

Chapelgate church to hold seminar for new singles

Chapelgate Presbyterian Church will offer a seminar for those who are separated or divorced, "Fresh Start," from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. May 18 and from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. May 19.

Temple Isaiah to celebrate purchase of 22-acre site

Temple Isaiah, a Howard County Reform congregation, will celebrate the purchase of a 22-acre site for its new temple in Fulton and the growth of the congregation with a "Site-A-Bration" from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 20.

The celebration, which will take place at the site, is not open to the public.

Groundbreaking is expected in spring 2002.

Congregations accepting Sunday school applicants

Calah and Shalom Aleichem congregations are accepting registration for their combined Sunday school's 2001-2002 school year.

The unaffiliated Jewish school meets twice a month.

St. Paul Lutheran School to hold May Fest tomorrow

St. Paul Lutheran School, 2001 Old Frederick Road, Catonsville, will hold its May Fest from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. tomorrow.

An old-fashioned carnival is planned, with a clown, moonwalk, the Baltimore Lutheran Jazz Band, games, prizes, a bake sale, gymnastics, a fire truck, food and a white elephant sale.

Friary near Glenelg plans a Mass of Healing today

The Franciscan Friars at St. Joseph Cupertino Friary will offer a Mass of Healing in the presence of a major relic of Saint Anthony of Padua at 7:30 p.m. today at the friary, 12290 Folly Quarter Road, near Glenelg.

After Mass, there will be an opportunity to be prayed over by a priest and to offer private intentions.

A prayer service for the intercession of Mary, in the Franciscan tradition, will be held at 10 a.m. tomorrow in the Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes on the friary grounds.

In case of inclement weather, the prayer service will be held in the chapel.
