A Mount Airy man accused of beating his 14-year-old daughter with a leather belt has been arrested and charged with child abuse, court records indicate.

The girl was treated Monday for multiple bruises and contusions on her left leg, left side and right arm and released, according to the records.

The 43-year-old man, who had been drinking alcohol that evening, is accused of striking his daughter with a belt about 15 times because she was not looking after her 2-year-old brother, court records indicate. The child's mother contacted authorities when she saw her daughter.

When investigators from the Carroll County Child Abuse and Sexual Assault Unit found the man near the home, he had a 2-pound maul, according to court records.

The man has been charged with child abuse, second-degree assault and concealing a deadly weapon, court records indicate. He was being held yesterday on $25,000 bond in the Carroll County Detention Center, according to court records.

The Sun is withholding the suspect's name to protect the identity of his daughter.
