Rahman's perseverance, dedication are impressive

After reading Mike Preston's April 23 column entitled "Don't knock the `Rock': Champ won't drop guard," I'm even more impressed with Hasim Rahman's perseverance and dedication to his sport.

While we don't know what tomorrow may bring for Mr. Rahman, what we do know is that after two devastating losses, he continued to press his way and now finds himself at the top of the "Rock."

Add Phelps to the list of Baltimore champions

A lot has been written about the recent championships by the Ravens and Hasim Rahman. Another major story of the past year has been the success of Michael Phelps.

It is truly amazing that a 15-year-old male swimmer made the Olympic team and set a world record in the 200 yard butterfly. He did so in a matter of six months.

Michael's feats should be included when discussing Baltimore champions.

Coverage of Blast too skimpy, shameful

The Baltimore Blast keeps winning their way toward the NPSL championship, which would give Baltimore an indoor soccer title for the first time since 1983.

The Sun should be ashamed of its coverage of the Blast. The Blast continually makes the all-important "For The Record" section, tucked neatly behind college softball and running events on page 7D.

It doesn't matter how important the game is for the Blast, the club never gets front-page respect with The Sun. Will the mayor be parading the Blast around town should it win the NPSL championship?

By the way, what you might know from reading The Sun is that NPSL stands for National Professional Soccer League. If the coverage was better, like in any other city where an NPSL team plays, more people would be aware and attendance would improve.

Instead, The Sun keeps hiring out-of-town sportswriters who could care less about Baltimore sports and keep ignoring the Blast.

Orioles' ad campaign about `kids' lacks merit

As an advertising professional and an Orioles fan, I was puzzled as to why the current Orioles ad campaign bothered me so much. As an Orioles fan, I know the team has no chance of finishing any better than just above the Tampa Bay Devil Rays for next-to-last place in the American League East.

I think my outrage hit a boiling point when I received in the mail a promotion with the headline, "Bring the kids to see the kids!" This is where I must say enough is enough!

The first rule in advertising is to promise what you can deliver. Sure, we in the ad business may enhance the truth, but never promise something that is not based at all in reality. If I took my 7-year-old to the Orioles game, she would not see kids, but mostly veterans taking the field.

The Orioles' Opening Day lineup of eight position players had an average age of 32, and their Opening Day starter was 32. Where are the kids? Baltimore baseball fans are savvy enough to know that this insults their intelligence.

Maybe that's why there are so many empty seats at Camden Yards.

Be real. Be honest. Yes, the Orioles fan can handle the truth. It's the warehouse gang that can't, and won't. Perhaps a better slogan would be "You're gonna be surprised!" It says nothing, promises little, but gives some hope. And as a fan, that's all you want ... hope.

What player on the Orioles is the leading RBI man? According to the team statistics listed in The Sun, dated April 26, it is that old, part-time third baseman, Cal Ripken.

Jordan rumors could be latest ploy by Pollin

Does Washington Wizards owner Abe Pollin really believe Michael Jordan will make a comeback with the team? Or is it just a ploy to try and increase upcoming season-ticket sales?

In my opinion, it's the latter. Pollin still knows how to make a buck regardless of how ridiculous he sounds. Next, he might even suggest that Wizards executive Wes Unseld will be back in uniform.
