Mom deserves this day

Face it: It's not the thought that counts. Giving Mom a painted rock paperweight or a portrait made of macaroni for Mother's Day might have cut it when you were 5, but ever since you hit puberty, she's expected a little more from you.

Here are some ideas for wowing her May 13 with the pampered-parent gift package you know she deserves:

Peaceful pink

Think pink in general. You want Mom to forget the years of back talk you've given her (at least for the day) and settle into a delighted, if duped, state, right? Pink is supposed to have those pacifying and calming effects. Try Victoria's Secret's "In the Pink" gift set, a shimmery pink bag filled with a lip gloss duo, PINK eau de parfum spray and pink mints, so Mom can rosy herself up as needed ($42). -- T. B.

Behind closed doors

The woman needs something luxurious to wear made of either silk or satin -- fabrics that simply ooze decadence. The Natori Collection is a good place to turn: Its pajamas and robes are all about luxe loafing. Try the satin kimono robe in cheery pink printed with Hawaiian florals ($130). Available at Nordstrom, Bloomingdale's and Neiman Marcus. -- T. B.

No more worry lines

Those lines and little wrinkles on her face? Don't kid yourself; they're your fault -- direct results of all that worrying you made her do in your teen-age years. And you know you don't want her reminded of that every time she looks in the mirror.

A kit from Elizabeth Arden can help. Packaged in a red travel tote are Good Morning Skin Serum, Good Night's Sleep Restoring Cream and a 2-in-1 moisturizing cleanser, all of which claim to help world-weary women better face the day. Available at department stores, including Macy's, for $32.50. -- T. B.

Sinking into a spa

And now, the centerpiece: the spa gift certificate. Whether you can afford a full day of beauty sessions (massage, facial, manicure, pedicure, hair, makeup -- the works) or just one treatment, chances are that any spa offering is going to put you in good standing with Mom at least until Christmas. Here are some area spas you might want to check out:

* Looks, LLC: This spa (pictured above) has an intimate, friendly setting and gives a pretty good pedicure. 10015 Old Columbia Road, Suite H-120, Columbia; 410-381-9030; www.looksllc.com.

* Glow Salon, Day Spa and Cafe: Not only can Mom get massaged ($10 to $90), washed and, well, waxed here, but she can also get a tattoo if she's in the mood. 2603 Housley Road, Suite 213, Annapolis; 410-571-6601; www.glowsalon.com.

* Neal's, the Hair Studio: It offers the gamut of services, with a five-hour "Pamper to Perfection" package available for just $152. 856 Park Ave., Baltimore; 410-528-8100; www.n-e-a-l-s.com. --T. B.

The perfect gift box

All right. You've assembled the goods, but now you need something to put them in. Check out Moo Roo handbags, the hot item in Hollywood right now (Lucy Liu, Ashley Judd and Oprah Winfrey all carry them).

Packing Mom's gifts in the Charleston Windowbox ($415) from the spring flower collection will show her you think she's got star style. The bag's box base is capped by bright, forever-blooming roses. Shop online at www.mooroo.com or find select styles at Joanna Gray of London at the Village of Cross Keys (410-435-2233). -- T. B.
