Concert tribute to Buddy Rich set for April 29

The life and jazz and swing music of the late drummer Buddy Rich will be celebrated April 29 in a tribute concert at Chesapeake Center for the Creative Arts on Hammonds Lane in Brooklyn Park.

Dave Tucker will lead a 16-piece big band in the program, which will start at 8 p.m. and be narrated by John Tegler, musician and host of the radio show "Jazz Straight Ahead" on WEAA-FM (88.9) in Baltimore.

Selections will include "Opus One," "Robin's Nest" and "Good Bait" from Rich's early days, and "Basically Blues" and "Ready Mix" from his later years.

The tickets are $22 for Chesapeake Center members and $24 for nonmembers. Reservations or information: 410-636-6597.

Cardin to hold town meeting April 30

Rep. Benjamin L. Cardin, a Baltimore Democrat whose 3rd District includes portions of northern and western Anne Arundel County, will hold a town hall meeting at 7 p.m. April 30 at Linthicum Library, 400 Shipley Road.

A member of the House Ways and Means Committee, Cardin will discuss the need to balance tax cuts with paying down the national debt, strengthening Social Security and Medicare and funding of "programs Americans care about such as better schools," his office said.


Honor society: Laura Catherine Williman of Linthicum has been inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa Society at St. Mary's College of Maryland in St. Mary's City. The society is for those who exemplify outstanding scholarly achievement. Williman, daughter of Robin and Donna Williman, is a 1997 graduate of North County High School.

Book sale: The Linthicum-based Ann Arrundell County Historical Society and the Anne Arundel Genealogical Society are seeking donations of used books for their semiannual book sale, which will be held May 5 at the Glen Burnie Improvement Association.
