ELKRIDGE -- Howard County police are investigating the crash of a stolen van yesterday that left an 18-year-old Baltimore man dead.

Gary Lamont Lee of the 3000 block of Lanvale St. died when the van in which he was riding turned over. The van, which police later learned was stolen from a Baltimore church, was traveling east on Route 100 and trying to exit onto Interstate 95 at 5:27 a.m., police said.

Police arrested the driver of the van, Nathaniel Sellers, 22, of the 900 block of N. Rosedale St. in Baltimore.

Two suffer minor injuries in Columbia apartment fire

COLUMBIA -- A two-alarm fire injured two people and caused extensive damage to an apartment complex in Howard County early yesterday. Fire officials blamed a cigarette left on a balcony.

The resident of an apartment in the 10000 block of Hickory Ridge Road called 911 at 5:46 a.m. after a smoke detector signaled a fire on her balcony. By the time fire crews arrived at 5:52 a.m., flames had engulfed 30 percent of the three-story building, fire officials said. A second alarm was called at 6 a.m., and it took 70 firefighters nearly a half-hour to control the blaze.

A firefighter was treated and released from Howard County General Hospital for a shoulder injury, and a resident was treated at the scene for a minor burn to her left hand. Damage to the building was estimated at $500,000.
