The Fountainhead Title Group, one of the largest title companies in the Baltimore metropolitan area, announced that it has merged with Merit Title Co.

Fountainhead, which has headquarters in Columbia and operates 14 offices in Maryland, Delaware and Northern Virginia, is absorbing the Bel Air-based company as well as its employees and business, said William Yerman, who founded Merit in 1990. Yerman will be an executive vice president with Fountainhead.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Fountainhead closed Merit's office in Bel Air, where it already has an office. Merit's 10 employees are being retained by Fountainhead, which has about 130 workers.

Merit averaged 600 to 700 settlements a year, Yerman said, while Fountainhead had 8,377 in 1999, according to the latest figures.
